This site has lots of information on it. Some is for moms. Some is for educators and others concerned about the lives of low-income single mothers. There are tips and stories, fact sheets, and recommendations for action.
Welcome
Back-to-School: A framework for taking action on the impact of educational reforms on low-income single mothers was developed by AWARE and the Single Mothers Support Network (SMSN) with funding from Status of Women Canada.
The Back-to-School initiative grew out of the need for a response to changes in the Ministry of Education's funding formula. These changes have created problems for all those involved in the education system. School boards are placed in a difficult situation, for they must fulfill mandated requirements without needed funds. In turn, individual schools are faced with the need to fundraise or ask parents to meet the necessary costs.
Tackling the issue
Our concern was the impact on low-income single mothers, in particular those mothers on social assistance (such as Ontario Works or Ontario Disability Support Program). Increased pressures on the education system translated to more financial and other burdens in the lives of these families. And we wanted to do something about it.
It turned out to be a hot topic. Over 100 low-income single mothers answered our call to talk about their experiences with us. School boards, teachers, school councils, and others concerned with and connected to the education system got involved, too. Creative solutions for listening to each other were the result.
